My NetWinder has been modified over a lunch hour to reduce the fan noise. It is now much quieter than the disk drive. We drilled four 0.5 inch holes for airflow into the side of the case and bolted on a new fan. A little black tape was used to cover up the old fan outlet. The NetWinder now runs at about 39C even with the fan running on low.

The fan is from Micronel U.S., Vista CA 90283, Part No. V463M 012DA GA-. It is stamped Aug '90, so it may not still be available. Its an expensive fan, but it only draws 10mA at 12V.
